An Inspiring Teacher to Me

Writer: Bonnie LeeBonnie Lee

Some of you know that I was a first-grade teacher before becoming an Illustration coordinator. I spent over a decade teaching first grade before enrolling at ArtCenter to pursue studies in Illustration. I participated in extension classes taught by Mark Todd, Christian Clayton, and Erik Sandberg, who motivated me to apply for the undergraduate program at ArtCenter.

While taking a printmaking course with Erik Sandberg, I encountered an outstanding teacher, Tony Zepeda. He allowed my first-grade students to take a field trip to his print shop, where they had the chance to create lithographs. "Let the kids have a little fun," he encouraged. It was uncommon for elementary students to make lithographs. I loved teaching first grade. Although the students' behavior could occasionally be challenging, seeing them as adults years later was rewarding!

Recently, I created an etching inspired by an atemoya. Printmaking remains my favorite form of expression. I intend to incorporate it into my pottery by pressing the carved linoleum onto the clay. Although I've lost contact with Tony, I still recall everything he taught us. He is truly a remarkable teacher!
