How a Passion Project Became a Teaching Opportunity

What began as a quiet curiosity about clay has grown into something deeply fulfilling. Handbuilding with clay came naturally to me—I loved the tactile experience, the rhythm of working with my hands, and the joy of making something from the ground up. More than that, I found a beautiful creative community to grow with.

Over time, I began sharing what I learned: teaching kids, hosting a free community workshop for church, and encouraging others to give clay a try. And this fall, I’m thrilled to take another step forward: I’ve been invited to teach a ceramics class for older adults at Mt. San Antonio College.

When I visited for orientation, people referred to me as Professor—a title that felt surreal. As someone who returned to college later in life, I’m honored to teach lifelong learners who continue to pursue curiosity and creativity at every age.

This new teaching role takes place outside of my regular hours as an arts administrator—work I remain deeply committed to and inspired by. I feel incredibly fortunate to explore both worlds at once: to support artists through my full-time role, and to step into the classroom to share my own creative practice.

Clay has a way of grounding you. It’s slow, patient, and generous. I’m grateful for the journey, the people I’ve met, and the chance to keep learning—now, alongside my students.
